The Africom commander meets with Haftar in Benghazi to strengthen cooperation with Libya
The U.S. Embassy in Libya announced a meeting between the Commander of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), Michael Langley, along with the embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires, Jamie Brent, and Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi to discuss the U.S. commitment to strengthening its partnership with Libyans across the country.
During the meeting, Langley emphasized the importance of maintaining Libya’s stability and de-escalating tensions amid the “current tensions.”
The U.S. delegation called on all Libyan parties to participate constructively in a dialogue supported by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the international community.
For his part, Brent stressed the importance of this visit, noting that he, along with General Langley, will meet “defense and security leaders” in the west and east to discuss how the U.S. can help unify Libya’s military forces and secure the country’s sovereignty.
For his part, Haftar’s media office said that Haftar welcomed the U.S. delegation’s visit, emphasizing the importance of strengthening coordination and joint cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism.
The media office clarified that “the meeting discussed the importance of developing the partnership between the two countries to serve mutual goals and interests, as well as exchanging expertise in the military and security fields.”
