Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline: Chinese Steel Giant “Jingye Group” Offers Its Expertise
The Chinese steel group “Jingye Group” intends to play a central role in the development of the colossal Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, an initiative aimed at connecting West Africa to Morocco and Europe. According to Zhang Yuanyuan, Deputy Director of the International Marketing Department at Jingye, the company seeks to provide high-quality steel products essential for the construction of this large-scale energy infrastructure.
Chinese Expertise for the Gas Pipeline
In this regard, Jingye Group plans to mobilize its expertise through its British subsidiary, Jingye British Steel, which it acquired in 2020. This entity, known for its involvement in prestigious international projects such as Beijing Daxing Airport and the UK’s Crossrail railway project, will offer tailored solutions to the technical challenges of this transcontinental gas pipeline.
Estimated at $26 billion, the project has the support of major international financial institutions, including the Islamic Development Bank and the OPEC Fund. It is a key driver for the energy and economic development of West Africa, facilitating access to natural gas for coastal countries between Nigeria and Morocco. Additionally, it will strengthen energy connections between Africa and Europe while stimulating investments in sustainable infrastructure.
Significant Regional Impact
The National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) plans to issue tenders in 2025 for the pipeline segments covering the 1,672 kilometers crossing Morocco. The first phase of the project will include Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, marking the beginning of the realization of this ambitious infrastructure.
Jingye Group: A Steel Giant with Global Reach
Jingye Group, based in the Chinese province of Hebei, has become an essential global player in the steel industry. With an annual production of 15 million tons of steel and exports to over 80 countries, the group has been involved in major projects such as the Brunei Transoceanic Bridge, the Shijiazhuang Metro, and works related to the Three Gorges Project in China.
Since acquiring British Steel, Jingye has strengthened its international presence by investing heavily in modernizing its infrastructure. Today, with more than 23,500 employees and a revenue of $13 billion, the company stands out for its commitment to environmentally friendly solutions. Jingye aspires to become a global leader in greener and more sustainable steel production.
A Promising Partnership for the Future of the Gas Pipeline
