AFCON 2025: Morocco Accelerates 120 Infrastructure Projects Across Six Cities

A strategic meeting held on Thursday at Morocco’s Ministry of Interior has confirmed that preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are progressing on schedule, with over 120 construction and renovation projects currently in progress across six host cities.

The meeting, chaired by Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit and Budget Minister Fouzi Lekjaa, who also serves as the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, included key stakeholders from various sectors.

Regional governors, city mayors, and leaders of national institutions such as the National Railways Office (ONCF), National Airports Office (ONDA), and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) were in attendance.

The discussions focused on the progress of stadium construction and renovation in Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Fez, Marrakech, and Agadir. All projects are on target to meet their completion deadlines.

Authorities have committed to ensuring that all works are finalized by December, a full eight months before the tournament begins.

In addition to sports infrastructure, the six host cities are undergoing urban development initiatives aimed at improving mobility, upgrading infrastructure, and enhancing the areas surrounding the stadiums.

These efforts include road renovations, improvements in access points, enhanced signage, public lighting, pedestrian zones, and the creation of green spaces, all designed to ensure the best possible experience for teams and supporters alike.

Regional airports are also being modernized to accommodate the anticipated influx of travelers, while the ONCF is enhancing rail connectivity between the host cities to ensure smooth internal transportation during the tournament.

The preparation efforts go beyond physical infrastructure, incorporating cultural programming to create a vibrant atmosphere in the host cities. Plans for street performances, concerts, exhibitions, and artistic events will highlight Morocco’s rich cultural heritage and offer a festive experience for visitors beyond the football matches.

Set to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, the tournament provides Morocco with a strategic opportunity to raise its international profile while stimulating local economies.

It also serves as a key preparatory event for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

Officials have stressed that no detail will be overlooked as the country works to organize an exceptional continental tournament, honoring the trust placed in it by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
