The Algerian Regime and the Polisario: A Repressive Alliance Exposed in Spain

Once again, the mask of hypocrisy worn by the Algerian regime has fallen. Shocking testimonies revealed during a forum recently held in Benalmádena, southern Spain, have shed light on the hell endured by detainees in the Tindouf camps, where torture has become an institutionalized practice, and fundamental human rights are systematically violated. These camps, transformed into open-air prisons, reflect a humanitarian tragedy orchestrated with impunity by Algeria, the main financier and direct sponsor of the Polisario.

Tindouf: A Lawless Territory Under Polisario Control

Behind the official discourse of the Algerian regime, which claims to defend the so-called Sahrawi cause, lies a much darker reality: Tindouf has become a lawless land where the population is subjected to the repression and exploitation of the Polisario, under Algeria’s complicit watch. At this forum, organized by the Human Association for Integration and Equal Opportunities (AHIO), survivors shared harrowing accounts of the abuses they endured, including physical and psychological torture, enforced disappearances, and systematic deprivation—all occurring amid a disturbing international silence.

Dahi Aguai, president of the Association of the Disappeared in Polisario Prisons, described these crimes as “crimes against humanity” carried out with the direct blessing of the Algerian regime. Despite Algerian authorities’ attempts to conceal these atrocities, reality continues to expose the true nature of the Polisario: a terrorist organization that survives solely through financial and political support from its patrons in Algiers.

Algeria: The Sponsor and Guilty Party

Algeria can no longer evade its responsibility. It is the primary financier, arms supplier, and political backer of the Polisario. These camps, where thousands of Sahrawis are held as political hostages, are located on Algerian soil. Yet, Algeria still refuses to allow a census of the refugees in these camps, blatantly violating United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Furthermore, the Algerian regime has engaged in an extensive propaganda campaign to distort facts and mislead international public opinion, desperately trying to hide the suffering of those detained in Tindouf. However, the world is becoming increasingly aware of these manipulations, and the time has come for Algeria to be held accountable.

An Urgent Call to the International Community

The forum in Spain represents a crucial step in exposing the impunity enjoyed by the Polisario under Algerian protection. El Akel Errahali Imane, president of AHIO, emphasized the need to amplify the voices of the victims on the international stage. Meanwhile, Spanish psychologist and university professor José Maria Sánchez Sanjuan highlighted the severe psychological scars left by years of repression and torture in the Tindouf camps.

These testimonies deliver a harsh rebuke to the Algerian regime and its proxy, the Polisario. Democratic nations can no longer remain naive in the face of these deceptions; they must take firm action to end this ongoing tragedy. The international community must demand the immediate release of those held in Tindouf, the dissolution of the Polisario, and full recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

History will not be kind to those responsible for these crimes. The day will come when Algeria will have to answer for its long-hidden atrocities.
