Sudan War: Endless Suffering
Since the outbreak of the civil war in Sudan in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, the humanitarian crisis has worsened to an unprecedented level. This conflict has displaced more than 14 million people, with approximately 25 million in urgent need of food aid. This situation is considered one of the worst humanitarian disasters in modern history, as people face severe shortages of food, water, and medical care.
In August 2024, the Global Famine Review Committee warned of a possible phase 5 famine in North Darfur, near Al-Fashir, with a significant risk of similar conditions in internally displaced persons’ camps. Reports indicate that over 1,050 people have died from starvation, and more than 9 million have been displaced due to famine and war.
As the conflict continues, Syrians living in Sudan have suffered human rights violations and theft, worsening their plight. In an attempt to end the war, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan offered to mediate between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates to establish peace. Sudan’s Sovereignty Council leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, welcomed this initiative, expressing hope that it would lead to real efforts for peace.
Amid these dire conditions, Sudanese people rely heavily on donations and humanitarian aid to feed affected families. Every contribution can change lives by providing food, water, and medical care. However, the suspension of some humanitarian aid, such as U.S. assistance, has put millions of women and children at increased risk, further exacerbating the crisis.
In March 2025, the United Nations announced the allocation of $110 million to support ten humanitarian crises, with Sudan being one of the most severe. This funding aims to alleviate the suffering of millions of Sudanese affected by war and famine.
The situation in Sudan demands concerted international and local efforts to end the conflict and deliver essential humanitarian aid. The international community must work seriously to achieve peace and stability, ensure access to aid, and support the country’s reconstruction.
