Morocco Secures a €781 Million French Loan to Acquire 18 Alstom High-Speed Trains

Morocco will benefit from a €781 million loan from the French Treasury to finance the purchase of 18 high-speed trains supplied by Alstom. This funding is part of the railway cooperation agreement signed on October 28, 2024, during President Emmanuel Macron‘s visit to Morocco, in the presence of leaders from both countries.

The financial support aims to facilitate the expansion of the high-speed rail network to Marrakech, continuing the progress initiated with the Tangier-Kenitra line.

The trains ordered by ONCF are Avelia Horizon models, double-decker trains designed to reach speeds of 320 km/h, with a capacity to accommodate 640 passengers. They will be manufactured in Alstom’s French factories before being delivered and put into service in Morocco.

Strengthening Railway Cooperation Between France and Morocco

The French Ambassador to Morocco, Christophe Lecourtier, welcomed this initiative, highlighting the strong partnership between the two nations in railway development. He also recalled the success of the Tangier-Kenitra high-speed rail line, which transported nearly 5 million passengers in 2024.

Additionally, the project will involve Alstom’s factory in Fez, which will produce electrical cabinets and cable harnesses, contributing to the growth of Morocco’s railway industry and the development of local expertise.

A Strategic Project for Economic Growth and the 2030 World Cup

Beyond improving mobility, this project serves as a driver of economic development in Morocco. It is also part of the country’s preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, a major event requiring modern and efficient transport infrastructure.
