Mahmoud Abbas Deals a Blow to the Algerian Regime and Affirms that “the Last Colony in the World” is Palestine

During the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas delivered a major blow to the Algerian regime and its support for the Polisario. Speaking before the attending delegations, he firmly declared that “the last colony in the world is Palestine”, effectively undermining Algeria’s long-standing attempts to equate the Western Sahara issue with the Palestinian struggle.

A Major Setback for Algerian Propaganda

With just one sentence, Mahmoud Abbas dismantled decades of Algerian propaganda that seeks to portray the Polisario as an anti-colonial movement. Unlike the Palestinian cause, which is unanimously supported by the international community and recognized by the United Nations, the Polisario remains a contested entity, recognized only by a handful of states influenced by Algeria.

This speech exposed Algeria’s political manipulation of the Sahrawi issue, which it has long used to divert attention from its own economic and social struggles. Meanwhile, as Morocco continues to strengthen its diplomatic influence in Africa and on the global stage, Algeria’s standing is steadily declining.

A Diplomatic Dead End for Algeria

Algeria, which claims to support the Palestinian cause, now finds itself in an embarrassing situation. While it makes grand statements about solidarity with Palestine, its concrete actions remain minimal and largely symbolic. In contrast, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has taken significant initiatives in support of the Palestinian people, including sending humanitarian aid, building medical infrastructure, and facilitating diplomatic efforts for a just and lasting peace.

Growing Recognition of Morocco’s Role

This event once again highlights Morocco’s increasing recognition as a key defender of legitimate causes on both the African and international levels. While Algeria clings to outdated narratives, Morocco adopts a pragmatic and effective approach.

Thus, the African Union Summit marked yet another diplomatic defeat for Algeria, which struggles to impose its agenda in the face of real-world developments. By declaring that “Palestine is the last colony in the world”, Mahmoud Abbas delivered a major blow to Algeria’s attempts to distort the discussion and reinforced Morocco’s position on the international stage.
