Macron: The present and future of the Sahara fall under Morocco’s sovereignty

French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that the present and future of the Sahara territories fall under Morocco’s sovereignty, affirming that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework for resolving this conflict.

Macron stated in a speech before both houses of parliament: “The present and future of the Saharan territories are within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, and autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework for resolving this conflict. This position is not hostile to anyone but is an invitation to all those who wish to cooperate in the region.”

He added: “France will seek to implement this position and will stand by Morocco in international forums, and French partners will support the development of these territories through investments.”

The French President also announced his country’s intention to enhance investments in Morocco’s southern regions, emphasizing the importance of developing economic partnerships with Morocco in this area and supporting sustainable development.

In this regard, he said: “Many actors and French companies will seek to support this region through investments and sustainable initiatives for the benefit of the local population.”

The speaker indicated that this situation opens a new page between Morocco and France and all those who wish to engage in a framework of Mediterranean regional cooperation between Morocco’s neighboring countries and the European Union.

He also praised Morocco’s efforts to maintain stability in the region by saying: “We see Morocco as a source of inspiration and a leading model in how to build cooperative and understanding relations with the countries of the Sahel and Sahara region, and we appreciate its efforts to enhance stability and sustainable development in this important area.”
