France Puts an End to the Arrogance and Duplicity of the Algerian Regime

The recent diplomatic crisis between France and Algeria once again highlights the incoherent and contradictory approach of a regime that has lost its bearings. While Paris takes a tougher stance against Algeria’s repeated refusal to take back its nationals in an irregular situation, the Algerian government feigns outrage and plays the victim card – an outdated strategy that no longer deceives anyone.

For decades, the Algerian regime has heavily benefited from the privileges granted under the 1968 Franco-Algerian agreements, which provided Algerian nationals in France with exceptional advantages. Instead of assuming its responsibilities and managing the consequences of its own migration policies, it prefers to accuse France of “provocations” and “intimidations.”

Yet, the same regime that claims to be offended by France’s decisions does not hesitate to use immigration as a tool of diplomatic blackmail, stubbornly refusing to take back its citizens in an irregular situation. How can one demand privileges without accepting the obligations that come with them?

Paris Adopts a Firm Stance Against Algeria’s Intransigence

In the face of this bad faith, France has decided to respond with firmness. The revision of the 1968 agreements is now an urgent necessity to restore balance in bilateral relations and put an end to the undue privileges granted to Algeria. The implementation of sanctions, including visa restrictions and limitations on Algerian dignitaries’ access to French territory, is a justified response to Algeria’s obstinacy.

But the issue goes beyond immigration. The knife attack in Mulhouse, perpetrated by an Algerian in an irregular situation whose repatriation had been refused fourteen times by Algeria, tragically illustrates this persistent irresponsibility. This is not an isolated case; Algeria’s laxity towards potentially dangerous individuals is a recurring problem that France can no longer tolerate.

A Regime Losing Credibility on the International Stage

Far from being a reliable partner, Algeria is increasingly isolating itself. Its refusal to cooperate with Paris is part of a series of hostile diplomatic actions, particularly its growing animosity toward Morocco and its rejection of Rabat’s diplomatic progress, especially concerning the Moroccan Sahara issue.

Trapped in outdated rhetoric, Algeria struggles to renew itself and continues down a confrontational path. The arbitrary arrest of writer Boualem Sansal, censorship of dissenting voices, and persecution of opponents illustrate an authoritarian regime more focused on maintaining power than improving its people’s lives. Instead of implementing reforms for a stable future, Algeria persists in its international provocations to divert attention from its internal failures.

The End of Historical Privileges

The time when Algeria could dictate its terms to France seems to be over. Paris has realized that it can no longer rely on a regime that does not honor its commitments and manipulates its citizens as a political bargaining chip.

In the face of this constant arrogance and disregard for the rules, firmness is necessary. It is time to put an end to the privileges of a regime that refuses self-reflection. History will judge a government that, instead of building a future for its people, chooses to wallow in victimhood and stagnation.
