European statement supporting the formation of a unified Libyan government and the holding of elections

The European Union mission and European embassies in Libya expressed their deep concern over the deteriorating situation, increasing political division, and the absence of unified institutions.

The European statement reads as follows:
“We are ready and actively willing to support Libya’s path towards the formation of a unified government and the holding of national elections.”

“We urge all parties to engage in good faith and seek to reach a negotiated solution.”

“We call on all Libyan leaders to put the interests of the country first, reduce tensions, refrain from the use or threat of force, and lift the force majeure on all oil fields.”

“The intimidation of members of the State Council and employees of the Central Bank of Libya, as well as the closure of oil fields and disruption of banking services, exacerbates the already fragile situation.”

“The continuation of unilateral measures and the personal management of state institutions and resources threaten Libya’s financial and economic stability and warn of escalating the crisis.”

The statement concluded by supporting the UN mission’s call for urgent steps to calm the situation and welcomed the initiative to hold an emergency meeting of all concerned parties to peacefully resolve the crisis of the Central Bank.
