The Unacceptable Delay of Algerian Authorities: A Violation of Human Dignity and Islamic Values

The tragedy endured by the family of Abdellatif Akhrif, the young player from Ittihad Tanger, exposes the indifference and disregard of Algerian authorities toward a human catastrophe. Since August 8, 2024, when a body presumed to be Abdellatif’s was discovered on a beach in Oran, the procedures for identifying and repatriating the remains have been excruciatingly slow, revealing shocking apathy.

Endless Waiting for a Simple Procedure
The family of Abdellatif Akhrif provided DNA samples as early as August 14, 2024, to facilitate the identification of the body. Yet, it was not until November 28 that Algerian authorities sent a report to Morocco. This report, incomplete and ambiguous, suggested a “high probability” that the discovered body belonged to the young Moroccan player.
Despite this belated progress, the deadlock continues. On December 2, the Moroccan Consulate in Oran requested a death certificate and permission to repatriate the body for burial in Morocco. However, these crucial documents remain inexplicably withheld, deepening the family’s anguish.

Disrespect for Islamic Values
The failure of Algerian authorities is an unbearable ordeal for the Akhrif family, who are desperately waiting to bury their son according to Islamic rites. In Islam, burying the deceased promptly is a sacred obligation that reflects respect for the departed. Delaying this process demonstrates a blatant disregard not only for human values but also for the fundamental principles of the Islamic religion.

Politicizing a Human Tragedy?
The observed obstruction seems to reflect political intent. In a context of tensions with Morocco, Algeria’s military leadership appears to exploit this tragedy to fuel their disputes. Under the guise of bureaucracy, this unjustified delay seems to be an attempt to manipulate the situation for political gain.

A Violation of International Standards
The actions of Algerian authorities constitute a clear breach of international standards regarding cooperation in the identification and repatriation of remains. International agreements and principles of goodwill between nations require swift responses in such cases. This disregard for international commitments only adds to the outrage provoked by this issue.

A Urgent Call for Justice and Dignity
This situation calls for a firm response from the international community and relevant institutions. Despite the provocations, Morocco continues to act with restraint and exemplary professionalism.
The family of Abdellatif Akhrif deserves to grieve with dignity and respect. The deliberate delay imposed by Algerian authorities is a blatant violation of basic human rights. It is imperative to demand adherence to humanitarian principles and sacred values to ensure justice for this grieving family.
