The Syrian National Salvation Front Calls for Recognition of Moroccan Sovereignty Over the Sahara and the Opening of a Consulate in Laayoune

In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 4, the Syrian National Salvation Front (FSN) urged Syrian authorities to reconnect with their “natural Arab and Islamic environment.” It also called for official recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, along with the opening of a consulate in Laayoune.

The opposition group emphasized the importance of Damascus restoring its “historical and civilizational constants” by strengthening ties with nations that support “Arab unity and stability.” In this context, it praised Morocco, Egypt, and Jordan for their efforts in stabilizing the region.

The FSN also highlighted the recent visit of a Syrian presidential envoy to Rabat, describing it as a “historic breakthrough.” According to the organization, this visit reaffirms Morocco’s commitment to supporting a comprehensive political solution to the Syrian crisis and marks a key step toward Syria’s reintegration into the Arab community.

The statement stressed the need for Syria to adopt a clear position on the Sahara issue. “We call for official recognition of the Kingdom of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its Sahara and the opening of a Syrian consulate in Laayoune,” the FSN declared. Such a move, it argued, would be a “strong signal” of Syria’s return to the Arab world and its alignment with key regional capitals.

Finally, the National Salvation Front called for strengthened cooperation between Syria and countries promoting “modernization and openness” in the Arab world, highlighting the crucial role of the private sector and the Syrian diaspora in national reconstruction efforts.
