Second U.S. Aircraft Carrier Arrives in the Middle East

The U.S. military announced yesterday, Wednesday, that the aircraft carrier “USS Abraham Lincoln” and its accompanying destroyers have arrived in the Middle East, after Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin ordered this naval strike group to expedite its deployment to the region.

This brings the number of U.S. aircraft carriers currently in the Middle East to two, temporarily, amid growing concerns of a regional military escalation.

The Lincoln is set to replace the aircraft carrier “USS Theodore Roosevelt.”

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated in a press release that “the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, equipped with F-35C and F/A-18 Block 3 fighters, has entered CENTCOM’s area of responsibility.”

The U.S. military command added that the Lincoln “is the flagship of the third aircraft carrier strike group, accompanied by the destroyer squadron (DESRON) 21 and the ninth carrier air wing (CVW-9).”
