Morocco Forbidden to Algerians
An Algerian couple residing in Spain was recently arrested at Algiers airport, and their passports were confiscated. The couple is currently prohibited from leaving the country. The reason is as shocking as it is absurd: the young couple had traveled to Morocco.
Upon their return to Algeria, they were detained and interrogated for hours by the Algerian political police about their stay in Morocco. A relative of the couple stated, “They are my cousins, and they didn’t know it’s forbidden for Algerians to travel to Morocco. An officer informed them that, officially, it’s not prohibited, but Algeria is preparing for war with Morocco, so any Algerian visiting Morocco is under suspicion.”
It appears that Algerians, including Kabyles, are unofficially banned from visiting Morocco. The couple, now held in Algeria, awaits the results of the investigation and may face prosecution. “They are suspected of working for Moroccan intelligence. Their phones and luggage have been confiscated. This is truly absurd,” lamented a close relative who contacted our editorial team. “They are young and recently married. They have no political affiliations, yet security services accuse them of belonging to the Kabyle independence movement, even though all their social media posts prove otherwise,” the relative added. They questioned, “If it’s forbidden to travel to Morocco, why doesn’t the Algerian regime announce it publicly and officially?”
It seems that Algerian decision-makers are steeped in paranoia and have an allergic reaction to anything Moroccan, to the extent of prohibiting their Algerian citizens and the Kabyles they subjugate from traveling to Morocco.
