Morocco Adopts Advanced Technologies to Enhance Surveillance and Secure its Eastern and Southern Borders

Abdellatif Loudiyi, the Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of National Defense Administration, announced that Morocco allocated 5.8 billion dirhams in the 2025 budget project for the acquisition of military equipment, weapons, and ammunition, as well as for strengthening the infrastructure of the Royal Armed Forces to secure the eastern and southern borders.

While presenting the National Defense budget project to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Islamic Affairs, and Moroccans Living Abroad, Loudiyi noted that “payment credits increased by 464 million dirhams compared to last year, while commitment credits reached 8.7 billion dirhams.”

According to the budget project, these allocations aim to fund previous contracts and projects, cover military debt, and launch new initiatives to strengthen the defensive and security plans of the Armed Forces.

The minister highlighted the achievements of the Royal Armed Forces in 2024 in protecting Morocco’s land, air, and maritime borders, stating, “Securing our borders is a primary concern, with human and material resources mobilized to monitor the 3,300 kilometers of land borders, the 3,500 kilometers of coastline, and the airspace.”

Loudiyi revealed that the Moroccan Land Forces rely on advanced surveillance systems, including fixed and mobile points, intervention teams, and an integrated electronic surveillance system featuring fixed and mobile radars, optical devices, vibration sensors, and drones.

On the maritime front, the Royal Navy uses modern radars to monitor activities within territorial waters and deploys intervention units along the coasts. In terms of airspace, the Royal Air Force depends on a network of fixed radars to detect any potential intrusions.

Finally, Loudiyi emphasized the pivotal role of the Royal Gendarmerie in border protection by monitoring threats across land, air, and sea domains and providing crucial support to ensure comprehensive security.
