Libyan Voices Call for the Return of Monarchy
Several members of the Libyan High Council of State, representing the eastern, western, and southern regions, addressed a letter dated August 5th to the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, calling for a return to a constitutional monarchy under the leadership of the son of the Libyan crown prince, Prince Muhammad al-Hassan al-Senussi, and the adoption of the 1951 Independence Constitution as the sole and final solution to the Libyan crisis.
According to the statement, the Council members praised the initiative of the crown prince’s son and his consultations over the past months, which aim to unify views on returning to constitutional monarchical legitimacy as a legal and constitutional framework for transitioning to a democratic state. This would ensure Libyans’ right to elect their representatives in a national parliament through fair and transparent elections.
The Council members attributed this to the “deterioration of the country’s conditions, instability, and the destructive conflict between various parties, which has exacerbated institutional division and led to a level of tension in the political process that has deteriorated security, economic, social, and humanitarian conditions, with a dangerous rise in corruption indicators.”
