King Mohammed VI’s recent speech, delivered at the opening of the Moroccan parliamentary session, underscored the nation’s diplomatic gains regarding the Sahara issue. The monarch highlighted the broad international support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only viable solution to this long-standing dispute. He praised the recognition of Moroccan sovereignty from key global players, particularly the United States, France, and Spain, noting the historical and political significance of their positions.
The King also emphasized the crucial role of African and Arab nations that have opened consulates in cities like Laayoune and Dakhla, reinforcing their support for Morocco’s territorial integrity. His speech stressed that the autonomy initiative aligns with international law and the UN Charter, showcasing Morocco’s commitment to a peaceful, political resolution. This initiative has gained momentum in recent years as the preferred path forward, after the failure of a referendum process in the 1990s.
In addition, King Mohammed VI called on national institutions to remain vigilant and to continue their diplomatic efforts, particularly in engaging with countries still hesitant about the issue. He emphasized the role of parliamentarians in expanding international recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty and in promoting the autonomy initiative across bilateral and multilateral platforms.
Furthermore, the King linked the Sahara’s development to broader regional and continental initiatives, such as the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline and the Atlantic African States Initiative. These projects are pivotal in positioning the Moroccan Sahara as a hub for economic, cultural, and strategic cooperation within Africa, further strengthening Morocco’s influence and support across the continent.
