Human Rights Day: SHOAA Strengthens Its Commitment to Defending Rights and Freedoms in Algeria
Every year on December 10th, the world comes together to observe Human Rights Day. This year marks the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights—a landmark document that champions freedom, equality, and dignity for all. However, the global celebration is shadowed by widespread frustration over the persistent failure of governments and institutions to uphold these fundamental rights in the face of alarming violations.
In Algeria, the ideals enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights remain far from reality. Despite its guarantees of freedom, dignity, and equality, Algerians continue to face systemic violations, particularly since the emergence of the peaceful Hirak movement advocating for freedom and democracy. In recent years, the authorities have intensified crackdowns on fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association. Activists, human rights defenders, journalists, and political opponents have been subjected to arbitrary arrests and other forms of repression, often under the pretext of counter-terrorism.
As we mark the 76th Human Rights Day, SHOAA for Human Rights reflects on its unwavering mission to monitor and document these grave violations in Algeria. Our work remains dedicated to defending human rights, amplifying the voices of those fighting for their freedoms, and bridging the Algerian human rights movement with international efforts.
In the face of escalating abuses and the Algerian authorities’ blatant disregard for the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, SHOAA reaffirms its steadfast commitment to advancing justice, freedom, and equality in the country. This anniversary is a solemn reminder of the need to persist in our struggle for a better future where human rights are respected and protected for all.
