BMW has decided to recall more than 720,000 vehicles due to an issue with the electrical connector of the water pump, which could potentially lead to a fire.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that the recall includes some X1, X3, and X5 vehicles, as well as certain other models.
According to the NHTSA report, the affected vehicles have water pumps with inadequate sealing, which may be susceptible to fluid intrusion at the electrical plug connector over time.
There is a possibility of a short circuit, and in rare cases, a fire could occur, according to the Associated Press.
Water pumps and plug connectors will be inspected and replaced as necessary.
The report also mentioned that a shield will be installed to redirect any fluid that may drip onto the pump from the positive crankcase ventilation air intake chamber.
Vehicle owners are expected to receive a recall notice in October. They will be directed to take their vehicles to an authorized BMW center for the necessary repairs free of charge.
