Citizens Threaten to Commit Suicide from Constantine’s Suspension Bridge
Victims of contempt, known as “hogra” by Algerians, citizens of the city of Constantine went to the suspension bridge called “the hospital bridge” (gantret esbitar) to commit suicide as a form of protest.
These citizens were expelled from their homes and found themselves, along with their wives and children, homeless overnight. Their small houses were destroyed by the local authorities without them being rehoused.
These citizens are calling on the people to say, “Today, we are the victims. Tomorrow it will be your turn.” This is a way of asking their fellow citizens to react against “hogra.”
Cases of suicide due to arbitrary and unjust actions committed by the authorities have become common in Algeria.
