Bourita: Ministry of Foreign Affairs committed to the gradual implementation of the official status of the Amazigh language
Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to gradually implementing the official status of the Amazigh language. This follows the provisions of Organic Law No. 26.16, which outlines the steps to integrate Amazigh into education and key public domains.
Responding to a written question from Idriss Sentissi, head of the Haraki parliamentary group, regarding the ministry’s efforts in this area, Bourita explained that a comprehensive and phased work plan has been developed to fully integrate Amazigh into the ministry’s activities.
The minister highlighted measures such as incorporating the ministry’s name in Amazigh on official correspondences, using Amazigh alongside Arabic on signboards in authentication offices and local consular offices, particularly in ports during the “Marhaba” operation. This initiative will soon extend to diplomatic missions and consular centers.
Bourita also mentioned that the ministry provides Amazigh language support via a toll-free hotline dedicated to consular services and offers an Amazigh-translated version of the “Consulat.ma” website, which provides information on consular procedures. Additionally, the ministry is committed to assigning staff fluent in Amazigh in consulates with high numbers of Amazigh-speaking citizens to enhance communication and ensure efficient access to administrative and consular services.
