Algiers: Summoning of Ambassadors from Certain EU Countries Regarding Their Relations with Morocco

According to APS, citing a well-informed source, ambassadors from European countries, whose names were not specified, were “received at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where they were asked to provide explanations regarding statements made by their countries” concerning the EU Court’s ruling against Morocco.

The APS agency recalled that France and Spain had “published favorable reactions” toward Morocco following the publication of the EU Court’s decision. These two countries have changed their position on Western Sahara to align with Moroccan stances.

Spain did so in March 2022, and France implicitly recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the Saharan territories on July 30, considering that the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat is the “only basis” for resolving the conflict in Western Sahara.

This position angered Algeria, which withdrew its ambassador from Paris.
