Algerian Consulates in France Accused of Taking Bribes to Falsify Migrant Nationalities in Order to Avoid Deportations
French-Algerian journalist Mohamed Sifaoui has raised allegations of misconduct involving Algerian consulates in France during an interview on Europe1 radio. According to Sifaoui, certain consular representatives have reportedly accepted payments from undocumented Algerian migrants to falsely classify them as nationals of Morocco or Tunisia, and to avoid issuing consular travel documents required for their deportation.
Sifaoui claims these practices date back even to periods of amicable relations between France and Algeria. He asserts that some consular officials deliberately refused to acknowledge the Algerian nationality of undocumented individuals, often attributing them to other countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, or Morocco.
“They set up lucrative schemes, promising in exchange for money to deny the individuals’ Algerian origin and not to issue consular laissez-passers,” Sifaoui explained.
These accusations come amidst ongoing arrests in France of three influencers who have allegedly threatened violence on social media, 2 of them had orders to leave the French territory (OQTF).
