Algeria: Arrest of Sheikh Ali Benhadj

On the evening of August 26, police officers raided the home of Sheikh Ali Benhadj. After thoroughly searching the premises, the police took the former spokesperson of the dissolved FIS into custody. After spending the night in police custody, he was presented this morning to the department responsible for cyber crimes. When his son Abdelfettah went to the police station to inquire about his father’s health, he was also taken into custody. As for his brother Habib, a lawyer by profession, he was prohibited from meeting him. Sheikh Ali Benhadj is reportedly being criticized for his recent YouTube interventions, which denounce “electoral fraud and the conduct of the electoral campaign.”
