For an Unfortunate Tweet, Former Diplomat Abdelaziz Rahabi Had His Passport Revoked
On Tuesday, September 10th, the former Minister of Communication under Liamine Zeroual, at the beginning of Bouteflika’s era, and former ambassador, published a Tweet on the X platform in which he interpreted the results of the failed presidential election of September 7th. An election marked by unprecedented and unparalleled fraud.
Abdelaziz Rahabi simply pointed out that “the silent Hirak has finally spoken.” He expressed his regret that what he “feared and denounced has come to pass. The country has entered a phase of ungovernability due to the failure to meet the major demands of the Hirak and the closure of political and media spaces.” A simple observation and an analysis of the election results that any citizen has the right to make.
According to sources from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following the publication of this Tweet, Abdelaziz Rahabi was summoned to receive a severe warning, which culminated in the revocation of his passport. From now on, like thousands of Algerians, he is banned from leaving the national territory. The former diplomat kept a low profile, apologized, and handed over his passport.
The man is truly afraid of losing his retirement pension, which likely ranges between 30 and 50 million centimes.
And to think that, according to Rahabi’s close associates, he had been approached by President Tebboune following his election in December 2019 to offer him the position of Prime Minister. A proposal that did not materialize for reasons difficult to explain.
The former diplomat, who spent nearly a quarter of a century waiting for a post within the power structure, was shocked by what happened to him on September 11th.
